In recent decades, digital orthodontics has seen a permanent rise, being more and more frequently used in practice. The digital analysis software of profile teleradiography and the analysis of photography, with the evaluation of some characteristic landmarks for facial aesthetics, together with the growth forecasting programs (VTO) represent today landmarks of the clinical activity. The authors aimed to present the advantages of the analysis of face and profile photos through digital technology with the help of Digital Smile software, compared to the manual, classic technique.
Material and methods. The study was conducted on a number of 50 photos belonging to a group of 50 patients: 30 females and 20 males, aged 17-19 years, with IAngle class abnormalities. The photos were analyzed both classically, by drawing some anthropometric points, and with the help of the computer by transferring information from 2D design to 3D design. (DSD CONNECT software). The following angles were measured: naso-frontal angle (G-N-Nd), naso-labial (Cm-Sn-Ls) and - chin-labial angle (Li-Sm-Pg)
Results. The measurements made by the 2 methods are substantially equal, but the digital analysis provides a preview of the final results. The program allows the user to reset the current selection and resume work on the same image. You can also save an area of interest and reference, and the images stored on your computer can be exported to other services: surgery, prosthetics etc.
Conclusions. The program, through an interactive, simple and efficient interface, is easy to use even by doctors with little experience in computer systems. In addition, it shortens the duration of the photo analysis and gives the patient a virtual, ideal image that he can obtain at the end of the orthodontic treatment.
