Session details

The latest wave of technological change is giving birth to a new type of business. Whereas up to now people handled the core operations and used computers as supportive tools, from now on core operations are increasingly automated end-to-end while people develop, maintain, and support the algorithms running the business. These are not just the data scientists and engineers, it is also the experts in supply chain management, finance, marketing, risk, people management, and all the functions of business. In the emerging world of work, managers need to have technology skills while technologists need business skills. For example, when a data scientist designs a resource allocation algorithm, she needs to understand and communicate effectively the strategic, operational, financial, and organizational implications of different design options. Moreover, she must be able to recognize and begin to address potential ethical implications related to the use of data or the implementation of automated decisions.
