From 1990 to 2016, except for the period 2000 - 2004, when he became a senator in the Romanian Parliament, he created and led several production and trade companies in the water treatment and agriculture industry. In 2000 he became a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), and in 2016 he was elected from this party, mayor of Buzau. On September 27, 2020, he won the elections for the second term of mayor of Buzau, with the highest score in Romania, 78.06%. After these elections, he became executive president of the Association of Romanian Municipalities, an organization that includes all 103 Romanian municipalities, including Bucharest, the capital of Romania. He promoted a vision of development of the city, ,,Buzău - magnet city until 2030", with the mission for ,,Buzău to obtain so much attractiveness and competitiveness for its inhabitants, investors and visitors, so that it becomes one of the most important cities in Romania ”. For this, 72 objectives were established to be fulfilled, on the 4 pillars of development: economic, educational, social and cultural. In the economic field, Buzău aims to become the national center of the circular economy, being the only city that already has a strategy approved by the Municipal Local Council, for the transition from the linear economy to the circular economy. On June 23, 2021, Buzău won the title of "Best City Brand in Europe", defeating Paris in the final.

He is currently serving as member of the Romanian Parliament while acting as Chairman of the IT&C Commission within the Chamber of Deputies. Mr. Sabin Sărmaș has been nominated Designated President to Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 of The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) by the Government of Romania. Prior to these engagements, he was President of the National Authority for Digitalization between 2019 – 2021, being responsible for the coordination and implementation of national policies, strategies, and projects in the field of the information technology, communications, and digitalization of public services. His cross-sector activities were also linked to the private sector, as software engineer and business developer within various companies located in the city of Cluj-Napoca. Therefore, Mr. Sărmaș has acknowledged and tackled the challenges of the sector from a multi-stakeholder perspective, becoming known as transformational and visionary expert.
