STOP ASKING HOW LONG; ASK HOW BIG
There’s a myth about Agile software development approaches that claims that with Agile, you no longer have to project release dates for a given body of work, because the complexity of our work means it’s impossible. The truth is Agile provides transparency on the estimation and forecasting process, and while there is some irreducible uncertainty, you can forecast with probability—and you owe it to the business you serve to do so as best you can. In this presentation, Richard explains that irrespective of the specific techniques you employ to generate a delivery forecast, the first thing you need to do is stop asking the humans involved how long they think it will take. Instead, simply ask them how big and complex the work is, then let the data take over and forecast using empirical principles.
